The TED story
My first TED talk I watched came at a time when I was experiencing a lot of imbalance in my life. I was struggling at work and stressed out with the demands, living dual lives as I tried to balance what my job expected me to be with who I really am and the reality of what was going on with a sick mother in law living with us at home. I saw the Yahoo CEO of the time speak about how we need to stop balancing work/life and start integrating the two. She talked about motherhood and how you don't have to miss your child's events because work requires to you to be at home late and hide in a corporate environment, you stop compartmentalizing and start being honest with yourself and others. This simple concept blew my mind. I decided I was done hiding my personal frustrations and laid it all out on the line with my manager, suggesting a change in my schedule to accommodate personal things going on. He was compassionate and agreed. My work performance improved. Such a simple idea conveyed in a TED talk changed my life because it spoke to me and motivated me to make a change for myself. As I learned more about the mission and values of TED, I volunteered in our local TEDx chapter a few years later and became a speech coach. Three years later, I have been asked to fill the organizer space as our founder is now in NYC following her own vision and dream to open a sushi sports bar!
