Hey, I’m Jo. I have been blessed to serve my country over the last 20 years all over the world and all the while leading organizations as small as 20 people to as large as over 1100 people. I am a Blackhawk pilot by trade but believe my Army Super Power is actually leading with compassion. Let’s face it…women just lead differently. We empathize and feel everything. That’s not to say that men don’t but the internalization of all those emotions, I believe, is different within a female leader vice a male leader. I think this is what makes being a female leader tough and emotionally draining but…beautiful. I have learned through the years to embrace it and encourage it in young women. I am not so sure that I did so well as a young hungry professional woman, always hiding my Light in a male dominated profession. Now that I know better and am comfortable in my skin…I hope that I have set a better example and in turn paid it back ten-fold to the many young women (and men) in the Army that are trying to pave their own ways. To round out my story I am a cancer survivor. It took hard work over the last couple of years for me to stop blaming myself for my own sickness. Since I didn’t fit the statistical mold for uteran cancer, the doctors thought it could have been stress related. Did I work too hard? Did my thirst to succeed in my career literally kill the chance for me to bear my own children? I know now that none of that is true but isn’t that so typical of me as a woman to blame myself? Logically it is ridiculous but boy did it take me awhile to come to that realization. I now realize, I was given a second chance…to really LIVE. So as I leave the military within the next year, I am pivoting into the non-profit world. I want to continue to LOVE coming to work. I want to continue to do good and see good in the world. And maybe, just maybe, pay back the Love I received when I got a second chance at life…and send all that Love back out into the world for some good.
