Rakim Brooks

Rakim H. D. Brooks is a public interest appellate attorney and nonprofit executive focused on democracy, governance, and social sector leadership. He currently serves as Senior Advisor to the President on Rule of Law and Democracy at the Ford Foundation, where he is helping to shape a long-term strategy to strengthen democratic institutions in the United States and globally. He previously served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Freedom Together Foundation, where he oversaw legal strategy, risk, and governance for one of the nation’s leading philanthropic organizations advancing democracy and social justice. Mr. Brooks was also President of Alliance for Justice (AFJ), a national judicial advocacy organization and policy coalition, where he led the organization through a period of strategic growth and deepened its influence on federal judicial nominations and legal policy. He clerked for Justice Edwin Cameron on the Constitutional Court of South Africa and for judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the D.C. Circuit.
