An idea worth spreading

The commercialization of information naturally leads to larger media outlets increasingly serving as the collection and dissemination points for news and information. At the same time, the profit or ego-motive of these outlets requires them to drive traffic to these properties through a variety of means. Commonly, they can use search engine optimization to enable heightened ranking within organic results. However, the very distributed nature of the information and the cross-linking of said conglomerate sites tend to cause their information to be more prominent given the current architecture of search engine crawl and retrieval technology. The risks? Polarized information hegemony where the biggest producers of content are naturally (both because of algorithms and hive-mind behavior as a result of those algos) promoted to the top.

The TED story

I was introduced to TED through my father who told me to watch Susan Savage-Rumbaugh's talk on apes. I then went on a TED binge, watching Barry Schwartz, Pattie Maes, and others across various disciplines as I struggled to do 5 miles on the treadmill. TED, and other venues to demand freethought, are what inspire me to keep going despite the seemingly endless amount of vitriol spewed daily across the ether.
