Roots of Empathy: program started by Mary Gordon, Canadian Psychologist - excellent way of becoming self-aware, developing compassion, and reducing aggression. New born babies are periodically taken into the classroom with their parents for the duration of a year. Children and teachers watch the baby grow and develop, and then reflect on what they observe. In the process teachers also learn about the children in their own class and develop understanding and compassion for their students. The program is linked into the rest of the curriculum so teachers do not feel that this program gets in the way, but rather reinforces math, language, science, social studies etc.

For the good of our two children my husband and I decided that it was time for a career change (at least for one of us) so as not to travel so much and adversely affect their schooling. He is Colombian, and this is how we ended up here. I’m currently reading “Finding your Element” by Ken Robbinson after watching him on TED! My husband is taking an on-line course on storytelling for change (making him a perfect person to work with presenters to hone their talks) and was required to watch Jaqueline Novogratz on TED where she mentioned some young men planning a TEDx in Kibera! I had no idea up to that point that I could plan and organize a TEDx! This is a perfect coming together of my passion for making links between disparate ideas, working behind the scenes so that others can get out there and do their thing, and my knack for planning in a professional yet (so people tell me) human, caring, compassionate and funny way.
