When we complain about people abusing power, such as corrupt politicians, what we fail to mention is that most of us would abuse that power if we had it as well. Of course I am not talking about you dear reader, you are an exceptional individual and are very resilient in the face of the temptation that power brings. I am saying that for every power abuser we remove, there are plenty of others jumping at the chance to take his or her place. I think it is our underlying assumptions about power that need to change. I suggest that there are 3 ways of acquiring power. Via coercion, manipulation or convincing. The first two we complain about while the third one feels legitimate. If we define power as the privilege of guiding other people's actions and having access to resources, then the only legitimate acquisition of power should be through honestly convincing the people who you would direct that you are deserving of this privilege. Coercing them or manipulating them into granting it is not
