In my current reinvention of myself, I am enjoying life teaching physics, chemistry and physical science at Mid Michigan Community College in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. It is my latest path on a career journey that has taken me in some pretty wonderful directions. The common thread in all of them has been education. I am passionate about education and I believe that now more than ever we have to rethink what it truly means to be an educated person. The future of our society depends on it. Prior to accepting my current academic position, I served as the Executive Communications Leader for Research and Development and Innovation at The Dow Chemical Company. There I was able to call upon my skills in science and in writing to provide executive communications support for the CTO and members of the R&D Leadership Team, creating key internal and external communications. I was also able to create materials for internal & external use by numerous groups, such as Media Relations, Investor Relations, Employee Communications and Executive Communications, including Dow’s first ever lab space at TED in 2011. I have spent most of my career oscillating back and forth from industry to academia, including 6 years as Associate Professor of Math and Science and Assistant Dean for Assessment at Northwood University, four years as a research chemist for Dow Core R&D in the Chemistry and Catalysis group studying dehalogenating enzymes and enzymatic oxidations and then pLED synthesis and characterization and eight years as a tenured professor of organic chemistry at Alma College, a small, selective Liberal Arts college in Michigan. All of this fun came about after I earned my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and completed a post-doctoral appointment in mechanistic organometallic chemistry at the University of Maryland. I have Bachelor of Arts degrees with Honors in both Chemistry and English from The Ohio State University and I have a fondness for the poetry and paintings of William Blake.

The value of a liberal arts education has never been greater than it is today. And fortunately, one does not have to attend a "liberal arts" institution to obtain that education. Today's technological advances make it possible for any student anywhere to have the opportunity to experience and participate in a lbveral arts education.
