I'm passionate about
I am passionate about advocating for social justice and using the law as a tool for positive change. From a young age, I have been deeply moved by issues of inequality and injustice, and this passion has been the driving force behind my decision to pursue a career in law. My journey has been shaped by a commitment to understanding and addressing the systemic barriers that prevent marginalized communities from accessing justice and achieving equality.
One of my earliest and most formative experiences was volunteering at a local community center that provided legal aid to low-income families. I was struck by the stories of individuals who, despite their resilience and determination, faced insurmountable challenges due to a lack of resources and support. Whether it was a single mother fighting for custody of her children or an immigrant seeking asylum, each case underscored the critical need for accessible legal representation. This experience solidified my belief that everyone deserves a fair chance at justice, regardless of their socio-economic background.
My passion for social justice led me to specialize in public interest law during my studies. I have been particularly drawn to issues related to civil rights, criminal justice reform, and gender equality. These areas of law not only address some of the most pressing challenges in our society but also offer the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and communities.
One area that I am especially passionate about is criminal justice reform. The criminal justice system in many countries, including our own, is riddled with disparities that disproportionately affect people of color and low-income individuals. The over-reliance on incarceration, mandatory minimum sentences, and the lack of rehabilitation programs are just a few of the systemic issues that perpetuate cycles of poverty and disadvantage. Through my coursework and internships, I have had the opportunity to work on projects aimed at addressing these injustices.
For instance, I interned with a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of incarcerated individuals. One of my roles involved assisting with the preparation of clemency petitions for individuals serving excessive sentences for non-violent offenses. This experience was incredibly eye-opening, as it highlighted the human cost of punitive policies and the urgent need for compassionate and evidence-based approaches to criminal justice. I was inspired by the resilience of those I worked with and motivated by the possibility of contributing to their second chance at life.
Gender equality is another area that I am deeply passionate about. Despite significant progress over the past few decades, gender discrimination remains pervasive in many aspects of society, including the workplace, education, and the legal system itself. As a woman in law, I am acutely aware of the barriers that women face in pursuing their careers and asserting their rights. This awareness has driven me to become actively involved in initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality and supporting women’s rights.
During my time at university, I joined a student organization that focuses on gender justice. One of our projects involved conducting workshops on sexual harassment and consent, aimed at educating students about their rights and fostering a culture of respect and accountability. Additionally, I have volunteered with legal clinics that provide support to survivors of domestic violence, helping them navigate the legal system and access the resources they need to rebuild their lives. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to using my legal skills to advocate for gender equality and empower women to assert their rights.
In addition to my focus on social justice, I am passionate about legal education and spreading awareness about legal issues. I believe that knowledge is a powerful tool for empowerment, and I am dedicated to making legal information accessible to all. Throughout my academic journey, I have been involved in various initiatives aimed at educating others about their legal rights and responsibilities.
One initiative that stands out is a series of workshops I organized on tenants’ rights. Housing is a fundamental human need, yet many tenants, particularly those in low-income neighborhoods, are unaware of their legal protections against unfair eviction and unsafe living conditions. By collaborating with housing advocacy groups and local community centers, I helped develop and deliver workshops that provided tenants with practical information and resources to advocate for themselves. Seeing the positive impact of these workshops on the participants’ lives was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my belief in the power of legal education.

The TED story
One of the Ted talks that I have been most inspired by has been Anubhav Singh Bassi's 'Putting Eeveryday Life on trial' that he delivered at TedxRGNUL. Being an alumni of our institution, his journey is particularly inspiring to me. As someone who initially aspired to join the legal field, he did not give up when things did not work out for him. Instead, with true dedication, he worked hard to create a name for himself in a completely separate feed.
In his Ted talk, he mentions how having loyal and long lasting friendships provided him enough support and courage to persevere even when times got hard and ultimately led to his breakthrough. He further motivates young adults to find their true passion and not succumb to the 9-5 desk jobs. He also talks about the importance of failing and how failing multiple times might teach one invaluable lessons required in order to achieve great success in the long run. He concluded the talk by reminding his audience that they are more than these failures that they might face and thus, must never give up on themselves or their dreams.
Things you might not know
People don't know I'm good at understanding and empathizing with others' perspectives, which has greatly enhanced my approach to studying law. While legal studies often emphasize logical reasoning and critical analysis, I find that being able to see situations through the eyes of different parties helps me better grasp the complexities of legal issues. This skill not only aids in crafting more compelling arguments but also fosters a more holistic understanding of justice and fairness.
Empathy is often an underrated but essential skill in the legal field. Many assume that being a good lawyer solely revolves around having a sharp mind, an ability to recall statutes, and a knack for persuasive argumentation. While these are undoubtedly critical components, the human element is equally important. Law, at its core, is about people—about resolving conflicts, protecting rights, and ensuring justice. My ability to empathize allows me to connect with clients on a deeper level, understanding their needs, fears, and hopes.
For instance, in cases involving family law, such as custody battles or divorce proceedings, emotions run high, and the stakes are incredibly personal. Empathy enables me to navigate these sensitive situations with care and understanding, providing not just legal advice but also emotional support. By truly listening to clients and validating their feelings, I can better advocate for their interests and achieve outcomes that are not only legally sound but also aligned with their personal well-being.
Moreover, empathy plays a crucial role in negotiations and mediations. Understanding the motivations and concerns of the opposing party can lead to more effective and amicable resolutions. Instead of approaching negotiations as a zero-sum game, I view them as opportunities to find common ground and mutually beneficial solutions. This approach not only reduces conflict but also builds lasting relationships based on trust and respect.
Beyond individual cases, my empathetic nature has driven me to spread awareness about important social issues. I firmly believe that the law should serve as a tool for positive change, and raising awareness is the first step towards achieving that. Throughout my academic journey, I have been involved in various initiatives aimed at educating others about their legal rights and responsibilities. For example, I have organized workshops and seminars on topics such as domestic violence, workplace discrimination, and cyberbullying.
One particular initiative that stands out is a campaign I led to raise awareness about the legal rights of survivors of domestic violence. Many victims are unaware of the protections available to them under the law, which can leave them feeling helpless and trapped in abusive situations. By partnering with local shelters and community organizations, I helped create informational brochures and conducted workshops that provided survivors with crucial information about their legal options, such as obtaining restraining orders and seeking custody of their children.
Additionally, I have utilized social media platforms to reach a broader audience and engage with the public on legal issues. Through blog posts, videos, and live discussions, I have addressed topics such as consumer rights, tenant rights, and the importance of legal aid. These efforts have not only informed individuals about their rights but also empowered them to take action and seek justice when needed.
My passion for spreading awareness extends to my involvement in pro bono work. Volunteering my legal skills to assist underserved communities has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. It allows me to directly impact the lives of individuals who may not have access to legal representation otherwise. Whether it's helping immigrants navigate complex immigration laws or advocating for low-income tenants facing eviction, pro bono work is a tangible way to make a difference and promote social justice.
Empathy also informs my approach to legal research and writing. When drafting legal documents, I consider not just the letter of the law but also the human stories behind the cases. This perspective helps me craft arguments that resonate with judges and juries, making the law more accessible and relatable. I strive to write in a way that not only conveys legal points effectively but also acknowledges the human experiences involved.
Furthermore, my ability to understand different perspectives has enriched my interactions with peers and professors. In classroom discussions and group projects, I often find myself bridging gaps between differing viewpoints, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative learning environment. This skill has been particularly valuable in moot court competitions, where anticipating and addressing counterarguments is key to success.
