My current role is President of the Intuitive Foundation - formerly Vice President of Strategy at Intuitive Surgical (maker of the da Vinci surgical robot). My passion is supporting research into scaling global open source surgical education and building a network of support for those repairing medical equipment. I’m on a diverse set of boards from global micro finance to AI enabled data extraction, and serve as a scientific advisor for several startup companies in Silicon Valley and my native New Zealand.

Smart use of new (and old!) technology leading to greater efficiency - whether it be in energy, transportation, medicine, education, or our food supply. To do this I believe we should be prioritizing building coalitions rather than reinventing the wheel over and over again in separate siloes

We need to develop a rigorous approach to developing Self assessment models for skill acquisition. We have scaled reading- and lecture-based knowledge acquisition, but we still rely on teachers and coaches being physically present with us to guide practice in psychomotor skills ranging from sports to music to surgery. Solving this will be the key to meeting the world’s needs for skilled medical practitioners.
