About Eoin

Bio

I have specific expertise and first-hand experience with the implementation of environmental policy and planning both in Ireland and across Europe. My PhD focused on the acoustics of the urban environment and saw me model and measure environmental noise across Dublin City. Following this I was selected by the Department of the Environment to represent Ireland on the CNOSSOS-EU Technical Forum of Experts, a highly prestigious group charged with the development of a common method for noise assessment in the EU. In 2012 I developed strategic noise maps for over 4,000km of major roads across Ireland. This work resulted in me being shortlisted for the Engineers Ireland Chartered Engineer of the Year Award. My research into environmental noise and planning has been extensively published and has recently seen me publish my first book, Environmental Noise Pollution, Noise Mapping, Public Health and Policy, with Elsevier.

I'm passionate about

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Acoustics – which is ideal as I’m pretty good at maths (at least I like to think so) &I play guitar.

An idea worth spreading

The Winter Sound Project - it is an interactive, community based soundscape project. Everyone and anyone is free to participate. This project aims to catalogue the sounds of Winter from all around the world. Everyone is invited to record a sound-clip (or video) of a sound from the environment that instills something in them. It can be anything at all – jingling bells, carol singing, the hustle and bustle of December shopping, the sound of snow falling (!), a beach party in Australia…. anything!
