The TED story
In 2022, I spoke at TEDx Portsmouth with a talk titled "Why I Gave My Teenage Daughter a Vibrator". The title often grabs attention, but the talk was about much more than that. It was about teaching girls and women to own their lives, own their bodies, and own their power. To claim the things others have tried to take, and to start conversations that are too often silenced about autonomy, choice, voice, freedom and, yes, sexuality.
In 2023, the talk was selected to appear on the TED platform, bringing its message to a global audience. Seeing it there reinforced that this wasn’t about me. The talk was about giving every girl and every woman permission to stand tall, speak up, and celebrate the parts of themselves they’ve been told to hide. Because ultimately, real change and real power come when women step into their voices and refuse to hand back pieces of themselves that are theirs by right.
