About Horace
Bio
From the first day he stepped into the classroom as a substitute teacher back in 2003, Horace Buddoo knew that it was the beginning of a lifelong and rewarding journey in education. He is originally from Jamaica but has lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for most of his life. Horace is currently a mathematics educator at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Florida which is rated by Niche.com as the 4th best independent school in the state of Florida. He was formerly at West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines, FL and part of the Broward County Public School system, which is the 6th largest public school system in the United States. Horace Buddoo is also the CEO of an educational consulting company he has started called Mind Education Consulting, LLC.
As a high school mathematics educator, he recognizes the anxieties and obstacles students, parents, and teachers face in trying to make math interesting and relevant to a world that may not always "get the point." Horace's goal is to help students, parents, and teachers to see math and mathematics education in a whole new way using innovative and technology-driven methods.
Horace Buddoo has been recognized my many media outlets such as NBC6 and National Public Radio (NPR) for his contribution to education but one of his most treasured recognition was when he received a Mayoral Proclamation from the City of Pembroke Pines for his work as a Master Teacher in 2013.
Horace is very active in his school and community. As a faculty member of West Broward High School, he served as the co-chair of the School Advisory Committee (SAC) and chair of the SAC Budget Committee. He has also served as a member of the Faculty Council as well as the chair of the Professional Development Committee and has facilitated and conducted many teacher trainings and workshops to help his colleagues on their own journey of being the best educators they can be. He has also served as the lead teacher in charge of the Algebra 2 Team. When he wasn't involved in the aforementioned and tutoring students, Horace served as an advisor to the Do Something Club of West Broward High, which is a local chapter of a national non-profit organization with the goal of creating a culture of volunteerism and activism among youth to foster social change. To date, this particuluar organization has mobilizing the school and community to combat hunger by packing over 100,000 meals to send to needy families and children in the local South Florida area.
As a huge proponent for student voice, Horace has involved himself in leading the West Broward High Spoken Word Organization. This group is affiliated with the Jason Taylor Foundation and promotes and sponsor Spoken Word Competitions, with the biggest one being the National "Louder Than A Bomb" held yearly in which students compete by performing original spoken word poetry.
In addition to his school and community activities, Horace has been very active in educational consulting at the state level. He has served on the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Mathematics Achievement Level Description Panel, the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) Standard Setting Educator Panel, and the FSA Mathematics Item Content Review Panel. He is also a part of the "Leadership in Education" panel which is run by Leadership Florida and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This 34-member panel includes accomplished superintendents, school board members, principals, teachers, state education department professionals, education foundation representatives, association leaders, business partners and other public officials around the state of Florida.
