Bio

Lvcas Fiat finds inspiration at the intersection of science, conservation and design. Whether focused on monumental trees or microscopic bugs, his work reveals the often unnoticed beauty of wildlife. For Lvcas Fiat, uninteresting science does not exist. Amazed by the teeming and vibrant life he observed on a trip to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, he left a career in advertising to join Projeto Mantis, an independent organization devoted to research, conservation and wildlife photography. As the organization’s director of arts and communication, he applies his expertise in design and marketing to conservation and science outreach projects. All the same, you’re just as likely to find him lurking in the rainforest looking for insects as at a desk staring into a computer. He has joined multiple expeditions to Amazonia, supported by organizations such as National Geographic Society and Greenpeace. Fiat also heads up Ooteca, a science branding agency working with nature-related institutes and initiatives to boost the impact of their work in conservation, research, storytelling and education. His mission: to use design to expand our perception and understanding of the natural world. Among others, he developed branding projects for Instituto Juruá, led by Rolex-awarded João Vitor Costa, and Documenting Threatened Species project, by award-winning field biologist Pedro Peloso.

I'm passionate about

Boosting research, conservation and science comunication through graphic design and branding • Connecting people to the wonderful and mysterious rainforests of Brazil • Influencing artists and designers to be inspired by native biodiversity • Nocturnal fieldwork in Amazonia • Folklore and horror stories

An idea worth spreading

There is nothing more inspiring and referential than nature, science, the search for the unknown and our vibrant biodiversity. An immersive, exuberant design has the power to personify, communicate and expand our perception and understanding of the natural world we live in. Science needs to have Graphic Design as an ally. Arts and design have a lot to be inspired by Science. Together, they are capable of promoting great changes and advances from projects that enchant and convert critical thinking to the fundamental value of research, art, education and nature in our future.
