Bio
I’m an award-winning health and science journalist, speaker, podcast host, founder of Screen/Life Balance, and bestselling author of books including How to Break Up With Your Phone: The 30-Day Plan to Take Back Your Life, The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again, and Vitamania: How Vitamins Revolutionized the Way We Think About Food.
My work has been featured in publications including The Best American Science Writing, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Slate, and Popular Science, and my TED talk on fun was the 2nd most viewed for all of 2022 (and led to me leading an online class on joy with Oprah, which will never not be a life highlight).
I speak and lead workshops and retreats about fun, creativity, productivity, and screen/life balance for clients including major conferences, Fortune 500 companies, business organizations, schools, health organizations, community groups, and hotels and retreat centers, among others.
I also write a Substack called "How to Feel Alive," in which I share advice, insights, and experiences. It's also the home of an international community of people dedicated to scrolling less and living more. Check out the link above -- I'd love to have you join us!
I'm passionate about
Helping people scroll less and live more—and encouraging them to prioritize fun.
An idea worth spreading
Ultimately, our lives are what we pay attention to.
We only experience what we pay attention to; we only remember what we pay attention to. That means that any time we make a decision in the moment about how to spend our attention, we are making a much bigger decision about how we want to spend our lives. If our goal is to have a meaningful and rewarding life, then we need to carefully guard our attention, and to treat it as if it were our most valuable resource—because it is.
Right now, the biggest threats to our attention are the devices we carry in our hands (the very same device you're probably reading this on right now!).
That's why I wrote How to Break Up With Your Phone, and it's also why I created Screen/Life Balance, which is a resource hub devoted to helping people create healthier relationships with technology.
After I began to create a healthier relationship with my own devices, I found myself (unsurprisingly) with more time on my hands—time that I decided to devote to the pursuit of things that brought me energy and joy.
This journey led to my latest book, The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again (which in turn led to my TED talk), and inspired my (evidence-backed) belief that, far from being frivolous, fun is the secret to a happy and healthy life.

The TED story
I've been a fan of TED since the early 2000s, and was elated to have the opportunity to give a TED talk in Vancouver at 2022 about the power of fun. I then was a speaker ambassador in 2023 for the wonderful Gus Worland -- and hope to be back for many more TEDs!
Things you might not know
Leading singalongs of Great Balls of Fire (I just need a piano); organizing summer camp weekends for grown-ups; asking lots of questions at doctors' appointments; subjecting myself to experiences that I describe as "uncomfortable experiences of personal growth."
Also, I wouldn't say I'm "good" at it, but I did once eat roadkill. ( https://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2011/02/does_this_rabbit_taste_like_tires.html )
