As a child, from age 6 to 13, Steve Barnhouse studied (and played) in the Himalayan foothills at Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India. As a young adult on a break from college, he returned to India for an extended visit and took a memorable overland trip from India, Pakistan, over the Khyber Pass through Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and on to Europe. Steve studied French and comparative literature at Beloit College then math and computer science at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent three years as a Lisp programmer at the Stanford University Knowledge Systems Lab on the Neomycin Intelligent Tutoring project from 1985 to 1988. From 1988 on, he has worked at various startups and small companies in Silicon Valley as a software design and development engineer. Experienced in the full software development lifecycle, Steve has shipped real products to real customers. Steve has in-depth knowledge of several programming languages including C, C++, and C#, and has practical hands-on experience designing, architecting, and writing complex software for a variety of applications from low-level communication protocols to desktop user-interface and web development.
