Bio

Philipp Gruner is a visionary leader known for driving growth, fostering innovation, and building high-performance teams across multiple industries. His career began in the hospitality sector in Munich, Germany, where he gained invaluable experience working at one of Europe’s top five-star hotels. This early exposure to world-class service, operations, and leadership laid the foundation for his future success in executive roles. After relocating to Canada, Philipp quickly made his mark in the hotel industry. He joined a national hotel company and demonstrated a strong ability to lead and execute strategic initiatives. His rapid rise through the ranks led to his promotion as General Manager of a newly opened hotel in Regina, Saskatchewan—making him one of the youngest GMs in the company’s history. This milestone was a testament to his ability to drive operational excellence, build strong teams, and deliver results in fast-paced environments. Recognized for his strategic mindset and leadership capabilities, Philipp was recruited by PTI Group (now Civeo), a global leader in workforce accommodations and modular construction. Over the course of 13 years, he held multiple leadership positions, eventually becoming Senior Vice President for the Canadian Division. His tenure at Civeo was defined by his ability to navigate the company through two major economic downturns, implementing resilient strategies that ensured long-term stability and growth. His expertise in financial management, operations, and business transformation allowed the division to emerge stronger despite industry-wide challenges. Following his departure from Civeo, Philipp transitioned into consulting, lending his expertise to nonprofit organizations and construction companies. His ability to identify opportunities, streamline operations, and drive sustainable growth made him a sought-after advisor in the industry. Philipp’s passion for innovation and sustainability led him to Paradigm Building Solutions, where he took on the role of CEO. Under his leadership, Paradigm has experienced unprecedented growth, becoming the leading Step Code 5 builder in British Columbia and one of the most innovative, automated, and efficient end-to-end construction companies in Western Canada. His vision has not only elevated the company’s market position but has also driven significant advancements in energy-efficient building solutions. Beyond expanding Paradigm’s core business, Philipp has overseen the creation of three new subsidiary companies, each designed to complement and enhance Paradigm’s capabilities. His strategic approach to business development, automation, and sustainability has solidified Paradigm’s reputation as a trailblazer in the construction industry. Philipp is now runs his own consulting firm helping others and other companies eis succeed, ultimately directly living his guiding principle through his work by making others better. A key pillar of Philipp’s leadership philosophy is his ability to create dynamic, high-impact teams. Throughout his career, he has consistently assembled passionate, forward-thinking individuals who are leaders in their respective fields. I'm passionate about

I am deeply passionate about building dynamic and high-performing teams. I believe that success comes from surrounding myself with talented, driven individuals who bring diverse skills, expertise, and perspectives to the table. For me, leadership is about creating an environment where people feel empowered, valued, and motivated to excel. Effective leadership has always been at the core of my approach. I don’t see leadership as a position of power but as a responsibility to support, guide, and elevate those around me. I strongly believe in the philosophy that “Leaders Eat Last”—a principle that emphasizes putting the needs of the team first, fostering trust, and creating a culture where people feel safe to innovate, take risks, and grow. My role as a leader is not to take credit but to ensure that my team has the tools, confidence, and support to succeed. I also hold politically centrist beliefs and approaches, recognizing that the best solutions often come from balance, pragmatism, and open-minded discussion. I value diverse perspectives and believe that decision-making should be driven by long-term stability, fairness, and innovation rather than ideological extremes. Ultimately, my passion lies in empowering others, fostering collaboration, and driving collective success. I measure my own achievements not by personal accolades but by the growth, impact, and success of the teams and individuals I work with.

An idea worth spreading

True leadership is not about standing at the top; it’s about elevating those around you. The most impactful leaders are not measured by their individual achievements but by the growth, success, and empowerment of their teams. At its core, leadership is about creating an environment where people can thrive, innovate, and reach their full potential. A great leader doesn’t seek to be the smartest person in the room—they seek to build a room full of people who challenge ideas, bring fresh perspectives, and push the boundaries of what’s possible. This philosophy—“Leadership is not about being the best, but about making everyone else better”—is what transforms organizations from good to great. It’s about fostering collaboration, providing opportunities for learning, and instilling confidence in others so they can excel. Empowering people means giving them the tools, trust, and autonomy to make decisions, solve problems, and contribute meaningfully. It’s about recognizing potential, nurturing talent, and understanding that success is not about personal accolades but about the collective achievement of a strong, dynamic team. In the end, the most enduring legacy of a leader is not their own accomplishments, but the leaders they help develop along the way.

The TED story

I believe leadership isn’t about being the best—it’s about making everyone else better. Throughout my journey, I’ve seen firsthand how empowering people, fostering collaboration, and building high-performing teams can drive real innovation and success. From hospitality to construction, I’ve worked in industries that thrive on precision, efficiency, and resilience. Leading teams through economic downturns, scaling businesses, and driving sustainable innovation have reinforced my belief that strong leadership is about adaptability and vision. At Paradigm Building Solutions, we’re not just constructing buildings—we’re rethinking the entire process, making it more efficient, automated, and sustainable. Beyond work, my passions keep me balanced. Whether I’m skiing with my kids, playing the trumpet and drums, or farming horse hay—yes, I do that too—I find joy in hands-on challenges. I’m also a certified immigration consultant and mediator, which has given me a unique perspective on problem-solving and human connection. And when it comes to sports, nothing beats the thrill of a World Cup match (go Germany!) or the precision of an F1 race. I believe TED is an incredible platform for sharing new ideas, bringing people together to expand their thinking, and—most importantly—helping them apply these ideas in their everyday lives. The power of great ideas lies in their ability to inspire action, challenge perspectives, and shape the future. At the core of everything I do is a belief in building, improving, and empowering—whether it’s people, businesses, or entire industries. That’s the story I want to share and the mindset I bring to every challenge.

Things you might not know

While much of my professional life revolves around leadership, business strategy, and team building, there are a few things people might not know about me. I have a deep appreciation for music and enjoy playing both the trumpet and the drums. Music has always been a creative outlet for me, offering a different kind of challenge and enjoyment outside of my professional world. Another passion of mine is skiing, especially when I get to hit the slopes with my kids. There’s something special about sharing the experience with them, enjoying the outdoors, and creating lasting memories in the mountains. Beyond my business career, I have also pursued different certifications that reflect my diverse interests. I am a certified immigration consultant as well as a certified mediator, skills that have given me unique insights into problem-solving, negotiation, and understanding different perspectives. I also have a strong connection to farming, specifically in producing horse hay. I own all the necessary equipment and handle the entire process myself—from cutting to baling—making it a rewarding and hands-on endeavor that allows me to step away from the corporate world and enjoy working the land. When it comes to sports, I am an avid Soccer World Cup fan, always cheering for Germany on the global stage. I also enjoy watching Formula 1 races, following the competition, strategy, and precision that define the sport. These passions, while separate from my professional career, are a big part of who I am. They bring balance to my life and give me the opportunity to enjoy the things I love outside of work.
