Mohan Kandaswamy is the founder of Oriental Aquamarine Biotech India Private Limited; a startup company in Biotech space. The company is working on commercializing the Nitrifying Bioreactor Technology developed at India’s National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health, Cochin.
The Nitrifying Bioreactor helps in establishment of Biosecure Recirculation Aquaculture Systems in hatcheries and has multiple applications. This will substantially minimize the water quality problems being faced by any establishment involved in the rearing and maintenance of aquatic species.

The Nitrifying Bioreactor is the first of its kind in the industry worldwide. The product is patented in India, Thailand, Japan, Philippines, South Korea and Indonesia and has attracted interest from industrial and scientific circles.
An alumnus of IIM, Ahmedabad, Mohan also runs a consulting practice. Apart from his professional work, he is an avid swimmer and aquatic enthusiast.

Nitrifying Bioreactor Technology for the establishment of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
The Nitrifying Bioreactors continuously and effectively transform ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate, and bring down their residual level near to zero. The technology facilitates management of water quality in a hatchery with maximum consistency, and least incidence of diseases and offers reef quality oligotrophic water. Recirculating systems convert the hatchery from an open larval system to a Biosecure-closed system with recirculation of water. This has the following benefits:
• Substantial reduction in water intake and least discharge
• Improved feed conversion rate
• Stable, consistent water quality and least physiological disturbance to larvae
• Minimum stress to the animal and least incidence of diseases
• User friendliness and better control over the system
• Significantly higher survival rate
• Stable maturation system with steady supply of nauplii.
