Qian Liu

Qian was the first Chinese analyst to join The Economist Group's research arm—The Economist Intelligence Unit. Under her leadership, The EIU’s Access China service has expanded into a global team of analysts covering China’s 31 provinces and 287 key prefectures, as well as Chinese Outbound Investment analysis. Qian aims to provide the world an unbiased view of China's economy, one that is grounded in substance rather than hyperbole or misconception. Her work involves deep cleaning of extensive and often highly problematic data, detailed quantitative forecasting using econometric modelling, and frequent travel to China’s regions and cities. Qian has also been responsible for a broad range of projects for the The Economist Group, including leading CQ Roll Call’s China project, overseeing EIU’s Chinese translation service etc. She has also been a guest lecturer at New York University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Social and Fudan University. Her past research focuses on Labor Economic, and her fields of interest include education, gender and employment. Qian’s research articles appear in regarded publications as the Oxford Economic Papers, and the B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy (produced by Berkeley Electronic Press), China Economic Review and China Economic Quarterly. Before joining the EIU, Louise obtained her Ph.D. in Economics from Uppsala University, in Sweden, and spent one year as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Qian is based in Beijing. She speaks English, Mandarin and Swedish and her country expertise is China. She is a regular commentator at media outlets including the BBC, CNBC, CNN, CBS, HBO and CCTV.

Economics, Gender and education

A friend introduced me to walk TED app and I got addicted instantly. Later when TED China ambassador invited me to speak at TEDxFactory798, I couldn't be more thrilled. I wanted to share my store and hear from others, and help spread the ideas of inspirations and empowerment. My TEDx talk was on "China--Decoding the Panda": Views on China tend to be highly polarized, either euphoric or total collapse. With an example of China's property market, I try to offer insights and explain why it's difficult to get the Middle Kingdom right.
