About Walter

I am a…

Scientist, Technologist

Bio

I am the CEO and founder of DeepSound/SoundPatrol, a music AI lab in Palo Alto, CA. I have a PhD in computational linguistics and have been a professor at Stanford University since 2018 where I am the course director of MED-205. I am bullish on large music models and cryptography. I am a General Partner at Claritas Capital (Nashville) where I run the "Media and Entertainment" investments. I am a member of the Recording Academy (Grammy’s), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a life member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Army and Navy Officers Club of Washington, D.C.

I'm passionate about

Exolinguistics, AI, LMMs, artificial language design, Philosophy of Language.

An idea worth spreading

I have noticed that when confronted with a proof of human test, I fail more than ever before. Also when I email someone, I frequently forget to push the Return button and assume the AI is reflecting. Perhaps we are in a reverse Turing moment, where we are tested by machines to find out who is compatible. "First we train the tool, and then the tool trains us" (Mc Luhan).

Areas of expertise

Computational linguistics, Large Music Models

The TED story

My wife and I were one of the first TEDx organizers when we lived in Brussels, Belgium (2009-2013). When we moved to San Francisco, we set up TEDxSanFrancisco in the Opera House yearly from 2016 onwards. In 2022 we brainstormed with Chris Anderson to set up a specific TED conference on AI in San Francisco yearly in October in The Herbst Theatre of the SF Opera. The third edition is coming up.
