Confidence is the Key to Success – Let’s Experiment More with Students Yes, you read that right — we need to do more experiments with students at the school level. And no, I’m not just talking about the science lab. Having spent my entire life in India and over 12 years in education, building and managing a chain of schools across multiple states, I’ve come to one simple realization: experience comes from experimentation. My journey from a curious schoolboy performing science experiments to a business leader handling complex operations has been full of trials — and every one of them taught me something valuable. Let me explain. Life is a Lab – Experiment with It In school, we go to the science lab, mix different chemicals, try out combinations, and analyze reactions — all in pursuit of a desired result. Life is no different. Every decision in life is a potential experiment: balancing emotions, managing resources, hiring the right people, optimizing finances, or even choosing the right partners. The more you explore, the more you learn. And through that learning, you gain the most powerful tool anyone can have — confidence. My First Big Experiment: Buying Land at 24 In 2009, at just 24 years old, I became the founding member of Arka Eduserve Pvt. Ltd., part of the Jain Group of Institutions. Alongside my friend and colleague Mr. Ankit Vohra, I was entrusted by our Chairman, Dr. Chenraj Roychand, to acquire land for a new school project in Madhya Pradesh. We had zero knowledge about land laws or legal procedures. In fact, we were on the verge of making a massive mistake by almost purchasing a litigated property. But that near-miss pushed us to dig deeper. I began studying land acquisition laws in India — and today, I’ve successfully acquired nine litigation-free properties for my company across the country. That was my first major professional experiment — and it became the foundation of my confidence in every business decision thereafter. Experimenting Beyond Land: Design, Construction, Recruitment Once I gained confidence from my land acquisition journey, I began experimenting in other areas: Architectural Design: I learned how to work with architects, saving the company consultancy fees. Construction Management: I streamlined processes to reduce costs significantly. Recruitment & CBSE Affiliation: I studied the regulatory landscape, coordinated with government bodies, and ensured our schools received timely recognition and affiliation. Some of these experiments succeeded. Some failed. But every single one taught me something. And with every lesson, I gained knowledge — and more importantly, the confidence to take on bigger challenges. A Lesson from Steve Jobs Steve Jobs once spoke about taking a calligraphy class in college — something that seemed useless at the time. Years later, that class helped him design the first Macintosh with beautiful typography. Had he never taken that course, personal computers may never have had proportional fonts. Jobs said it best: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” So Why Should Students Experiment More in School? Because confidence is built through experiences — and experiences come from trying new things. If a student succeeds at an experiment or challenge, it boosts their self-belief. If they fail, that’s okay too — it’s a chance to build resilience, reflect, and try again. As educators, it’s our responsibility to create safe environments where students can fail forward.
