An idea worth spreading

Setswana has a tradition of Botho. This concept is difficult to explain. It could be said to be a measure of someone’s humanity. It extends beyond good manners, kindness and charitable conduct. It espouses virtues of humility, compassion and an appreciation that humans exist for the eternal and generous sharing of goodwill with all other humanity. Botho is, among other things, a Setswana traditional code of honour which teaches all humanity exists cooperatively and in an interdependent way. In Botho lies a latent rigour to affirm oneself through wholesomeness and harmony. It moves one close to his or her values through service and pride. It can be perceived as some form of large scale community altruism. This tradition is slowly dying out. I would love for my country to be re-‘Botholized’ and for the youth to regain pride in being Batswana and sharing their best ideas, and highest endeavours.
