An idea worth spreading

Throughout my school years, I have found that adopting a growth mindset had not only improved myself, my mental health but also my academics. I was able to take more risks, as I was no longer afraid of judgment or challenge. I wanted to stretch my potential, in trying things I never thought I could do.

The TED story

My name is Anh, and I live in California. I am an endless and curious learner, a student in high school. Public speaking, designing, and helping others are my passions. Growing up, friends, and teachers often praised me. Schoolwork came easily to me from elementary to middle school, without requiring me to work hard. However, as I entered high school things were different. Stuck in the same ways, I rarely studied for tests and would use the same method of reading the textbook repeatedly even though my results were consistently not the best. When seeing my friends win awards or earn top grades I would feel threatened and think of myself as less intelligent. It was not until I came across the book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, written by professor Carol Dweck did I realize through hard work and effort, I can learn new things and improve upon myself. This book compared a fixed mindset with a growth one while teaching readers how to expand theirs. Memories showered me, as I remembered the times I would redo an easy puzzle because I needed the brief term praise. Or the times I would refuse to raise my hand to ask a question, as I was afraid of judgment. I decided that I needed to change my mindset. The first step I took was to identify my weaknesses and work to overcome them. Instead of just accepting my poor test scores, I meet and discuss my work with the teacher on how I could improve. Doing this was hard for me since I was not used to feedback from others. During my basketball games, I was frequently benched. So at practices, I decided to always come early, and treat my drills just like games. After long hours of practice, I was called on by my coach to start the game as my skills improved majorly. This made me thrilled, and it taught me that skills or talents are not natural, but they require many efforts and time into building the success that everyone sees. As I got better at embracing challenges and pulling myself up whenever I fell, I realized how much having a growth mindset had changed me. I was more confident in myself and took more risks. I joined the Model United Nations again, even though I had quit in seventh grade. During my MUN conferences, I often made speeches, and had met many new friends! At my basketball games, the times when I caused a turnover, I would quickly shake it off and redeem myself the next time. Having a growth mindset allowed me to have more opportunities and higher achievements. In high school, I established my mission of sharing this with others. I wanted to help children to develop this mindset from early on and not have to struggle with a fixed mindset like I did. Therefore MindsetSeed was born. MindsetSeed aims to promote the adoption of a growth mindset in children. Where we strive to advance education and self-actualization in the youth, producing the next generation of leaders and innovative thinkers.
