About Patrick

Bio

I am a Ventura County native and have lived in Simi Valley, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Moorpark. I teach at Santa Clara High School in Oxnard and am a veteran of the California Army National Guard with over eight years of experience in organizational leadership. I have led teams of Soldiers on a wide range of missions including wildfire fighting, and overseas deployments. As a teacher, I practice culturally responsive pedagogy rooted in an ethic of care. For the past five years as I have translated my experience in team building, mentoring, and innovating create unique and valuable classroom environments. My work as a scholar practitioner is focused on reinventing educational systems to work for students, particularly to ensure that no student is marginalized. I hold a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Mary's College, an M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership from California Lutheran University, and am currently completing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at Loyola Marymount.

An idea worth spreading

Education is an act of love. Everything educators do carries moral, social, and therefore political weight...there is no such thing as "amoral" teaching. The integral nature of human development requires both an acknowledgement of the uniqueness, the peculiarity, of each individual and their own agency as persons and our interdependence on each other and the social systems we create. Education is a powerful route to provide access to the goods society has to offer, and therefore has an obligation to ensure that all persons have access to those goods in accord with their inherent dignity.
