About Emily

Bio

I am the Licensee/ Director of TEDxYouth@Franklin. I am also the founder of Kids Who Code, a summer camp and after school club for kids in the Nashville area that teaches the foundation of coding for kids from 3rd-8th grade.

An idea worth spreading

I really believe in treating coding like a language. It is universal and ever expanding. States require foreign language classes but how applicable to the future is two-years of high school German, French, or Latin? But programming on the other hand will be vital knowledge for the next generation as more jobs turn towards the networked world. For this shift to happen, education needs to treat classes differently. States should allow students who take programming classes and show a thorough knowledge of a programming language to count this towards their foreign language credits. Kentucky has already started this change and I hope that other states follow its footsteps.
