About Robert

Bio

Robert Swan is the world’s first person to walk to both the North and South Poles. His 900-mile journey to the South Pole, ‘In the Footsteps of Scott,’ stands as the longest unassisted walk ever made on earth. These experiences helped shape Swan's life goal: to ensure the preservation of Antarctica, the Earth’s last great wilderness. He founded 2041, an organization dedicated to this purpose. Key initiatives include partnership since the early 1990s with the United Nations World Summit for Sustainable Development, and a wide range of global and local environmental missions which have inspired youth around the world to become sustainable leaders and promote the use of renewable energy. Since 2003, Swan has led annual expeditions to Antarctica to heighten awareness of the Antarctic and build advocacy to ensure its survival as a wilderness.

The TED story

No one is inspired by negative and the only way to overcome a bad idea is to replace it with a better one. The challenge is how do we engage and Inspire people to make real change when we're always surrounded by negative images. This is an invitation to reevaluate how we spend our lives: how we create community and outcome. As the last unspoilt wilderness on earth, Antarctica is currently protected by a treaty prohibiting drilling and mining until 2041. Decisions made by today’s youth will impact our entire planet’s ecosystem and the future of life on earth.
