I'm an evolutionary ecologist at Tufts University, where I mainly study insect sex. I'm a true believer in making science accessible, so this year I've retreated to a lakeside cabin in New Hampshire where I'm writing a popular book. It's called SILENT SPARKS: The Hidden Lives of Fireflies. Certainly the most charismatic insects on Earth, fireflies evoke a nearly mystical reverence across human cultures. This book reveals previously undisclosed secrets about firefly linguistics, sex and death, woven together with stories of the scientists who've dedicated many lifetimes' worth of summer nights to shedding new light on these tiny insects. An added bonus: a field guide to identifying U.S. fireflies!

In my free time I enjoy living underwater, kayaking, hermit crabs, taichi and - whenever possible - finding wonder.
