Bio

Vik Muniz Born in 1961 in São Paulo. Lives and works in New York and Rio de Janeiro. Two comprehensive retrospectives of Vik Muniz’s work are currently traveling. One started at the Tel Aviv Art Museum and it's currently on view at the Long West Shanghai Art Museum and the other traveling through North and South America, opening next in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Other major solo exhibitions include Museum Banco de La Republica, Bogotá; Coleção Lambert, Avignon, Moscow House of Photography; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro; Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo; the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA and the International Center of Photography, New York. Besides his artistic activities, Vik is involved in educational and social projects in Brazil and the US. His documentary Waste Land (2010) was nominated for the Oscars and won the Sundance Audience Award for Best Film. In 2011 he was nominated Good Will Ambassador by Unesco and in January 2013 he received the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum. Vik is a member of the Network of Global Agenda Council. His most recent documentary This is not a Ball, is currently on view throughout Latin America and the US. He was commissioned by the MTA to do the 72nd street and 2nd Ave. subway station in NY opening to the public in 2016.
