Bio

My name is Suchir Patil and I am pursuing Master of Earth Science from The Australian National University. I am currently doing research in remote sensing and photogrammetry. Curiosity in nature, sports and technology has cruised me to explore different interests in life. At an early age, I started reading novels, fiction at first and eventually broadened my interests towards non-fiction and biopics. Also, I was exposed to computers at an early age and I developed the ability to understand technology quickly. I was already dismantling and assembling computers at grade 5. It has been my hobby to repair digital devices and recommend using right technology for my family, friends and colleagues. My other hobbies are photography, hiking, swimming, badminton, table-tennis, long distance running and cycling. Throughout my life and career, I have been consistently performing well in both academics and sports. I represented Lawn Tennis for my school and state in regional and national level competition securing first in the regionals. I was also in scouts and awarded the Rajyapuraskar. As part of my school co-curricular activity, I went for a 10-day trek to Western Ghats which instilled my interest in nature. During my undergraduate program, I carried out a project on a creative futuristic concept that resolved the issue of traffic problems and provided ease for traffic police and the commuters. The project combined the disciplines of mechanical, electronics and computer science engineering. Later, I also published and presented paper entitled ‘Design and Development of Smart Speed Breaker (SSB)’ in the same area at the International Research Conference on Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering (IRCCSME) in 2014. Although I graduated in mechanical engineering, I was immediately placed in a global IT products company. I had to opt for information science job as there was minimal opportunity for mechanical graduates. Currently, I am working in delivering products and services implementation for our customers. During my Global Services Associate Induction program for new joiners, I was quite competitive amongst my fellow mates who came from computer science background and I bagged the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award although I was from mechanical engineering discipline. Also went on to take six industry certifications including an expert level in very short period of time. I have realized that multidisciplinary experience is required to unlock and discover new possibilities in life. My earnings and savings from my current job has fueled to pursue my interests on exploring mountains. I had an opportunity to trek in the Western Ghats again and eventually the Himalayas. I have fallen in love with mountains after experiencing the first trek to Himalayas, the Chandrashila peak (13000ft). I did Basic Mountaineering one-month course from National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), India where I was part of expedition to Meerathan Glacier (16500ft). With a total of six expeditions to Himalayas, I observed the human and climate change impact on the mountains with rise in temperature and receding glaciers. For the last couple of years, it has been an adventurous journey for me to arrive at the decision now to pursue Master of Science in Earth Sciences. The environment change and its impact has made me realize the importance of nature and life. Hence to conserve nature and find solutions for ongoing climate change, I feel it is crucial to study the formation of earth, its sciences and further specialize in mountain environments and finally serve in preserving the ecological balance on this planet. My expeditions have primed me to explore more and has been beneficial to apply my knowledge further. As an aspiring explorer, mountaineer and scientist, I would like to commit myself in conserving nature especially the mountain environments.
