About Emily

I am a…

Connector, Explorer, Idea generator, Journalist, Writer/Editor

Bio

I'm a writer. I write about the human experience—why we are the way we are, and how we can find meaning and grace in a world that's full of suffering. That's what my new book, "THE POWER OF MEANING: Crafting a Life That Matters," is about. The book grew out of an article I wrote for The Atlantic called, "There's more to life than being happy." I first learned about TED when I was in college, and fell in love with its mission and the ideas it was spreading. (The first TED talk I ever watched was Steven Pinker's on the decline of violence.) So it's such an honor to be speaking here in the closing session. My talk is about "creating a meaningful life."

I'm passionate about

Helping people create meaningful lives. My family and friends. Ideas. Psychology. Philosophy. Literature. Good stories, in whatever form they come in. Transcendent experiences. Beauty.

An idea worth spreading

There's more to life than being happy. For most people, happiness is the goal. But should it be? Are we simply here for the party? I think we're here to create meaningful lives—which is different from a happy life and ultimately brings a deeper sense of contentment and satisfaction. Above all, I think we each have the power to build meaning in our own lives.
