Bio

Artist and musician, Cyrille Brissot combines technical skill and artistic talent. Brissot holds a degree in acoustic engineering from the Arts et Metiers and works at IRCAM, acting in the investigation of possibilities of expression in the interaction with new media from the development of technologies for interactive art. Considered an expert in capturing the gesture and its translation into music, he is regularly invited to speak at conferences and symposia around the world (France, USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, India ...). By his specialty, he was nicknamed by the media : Human Interface (KR magazine, France Culture, France Inter ...). His many artistic projects have taken him through the singular world, in which he redefined approaches to incorporate the techniques of avant-garde. This singular path has allowed him to win numerous international prizes in music, in video and in Digital Arts (Festival Paris / Berlin, Prize for Best Creation of the Year 2009 - Bains Numeriques, winner of the Villa Medicis "Hors les Murs" - projeto BarathaData (India), The French Grammy Award in electronic Music - Emilie Simon Project). His works are seen in various cities (Los Angeles, Stanford, Harvard, Paris, Berlin, Taipe, Tokyo, Osaka, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Habana, Gainsville, Santa Cruz, Sao Paulo, Rio, Salvador, Uberlandia ...). To learn about new areas, he likes to collaborate with different artists (Marina Abramovic, Carlinhos Brown, Nicolas Frize, Marko93, Emilie Simon, Seny Lee, Ben Vedren ...) and thus result to hybrid works or two worlds confront and enrich themselves. Thus are born the works Stardust (Cite des Sciences, Paris, 2001), Works and Paper Inc.. (LA, 2002), Ganga (2002), Speaking with wind (2006), Aqua (GRM, 2007), Movie concert (Seoul, 2007) AquaVox (Paris, 2007), BarathaData (Chennai, 2008), ShowLight (Grand Palais - Paris, 2007), ES / PCL (Pleyel - Paris, 2007), Mayakkam-Oxymore (Paris, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad , 2009), VoxStrumental (Paris, 2010), Metropolis (DAF - Taipe, 2010), Entre/EmUmSerE/HaUmOutro (MAM - Salvador, 2010), Incandescente (Uberlandia, 2010), Electro-Axe (Salvador, 2011), Saudade/Sol (Rio, 2012), GlobalOpus (Salvador, 2012). Since arriving in 1998 at IRCAM, he actively participated in the establishment of a policy of democratization of tools for contemporary music to make them available to popular music. Thus since 2002, he has worked in close collaboration with the composer and pop singer, Emilie Simon in studio and on stage. In his work with her, he designs and performs "instruments/ controllers" (C.A.D.R.E, B.O.B.B.I, B.R.A.H.A.S) that make it possible to recreate the effects and computer-processing techniques live directly from the acoustic instruments and the singer's voice. Ever eager to experiment with new art forms, they never hesitated in testing new artistic field and enjoy putting together exceptional concerts. This particular job contributed to the specific electronic parts, made it possible for LP Emilie Simon won the Victoires de la Musique (2004, 2006, 2007) in the category Electronic Music, and Grand Prix SACEM in Electronic Music (2011). To serve his music, Cyrille Brissot develops various software and audio plugins. He is the author of TheArchitect, MoteurA, TheSatelites, LiveCompagnons, 1-Pro-Vis, Octogone ... and participated in the development of many innovative products: EtherSense, WiseBox, eo-Body, Persephone, Lemur, Karlax ... etc. In 2004, mandated by the french National Education, he developed MusiqueLab-Audio. In 2010, he developed a collection of plugins (M4L) IrcaMax (collaboration between IRCAM and Ableton, to propose some ircam-technologies). Always ready to experiment with new artistic horizons, he does not hesitate to embark on adventures away from his musical concern. Thus he developed the software Ecran specializes in "array processing" of video and VJJV, VJing software that interacts with the music. Various project with the iconic graffiti Marko93 led him to develop new techniques of Light-Painting, which are employed in Light-Flux software. His work in the field of image allowed him access to various Digital Art festivals and museums with pieces such as CommeNarcisse... (DAF - Taipei, 2010), A quoi tu Penses? (MAM - Salvador, 2010), in which the public is placed at the center of the objective of installation so that it becomes the author of his own image, becomes an actor in their own lives. In 2002, he produced his first two videos for the pieces Idiosyncracy (Paris, Havana, Gainsville, Santa-Cruz, Stanford, Harvard, Los Angeles, Paris/ Berlin Festival) and Helix (Stanford). He has also created videos for Philippe Leroux that were processed in real-time during their projection at the monographic concert by the Ensemble Cairn in 2005. In 2006, he was commissioned by the "Movie Concert" festival in Seoul to produce the video and music for Artificial life.

I'm passionate about

How to use technologies for Art.

An idea worth spreading

The hand of man, of a potter, a glass blower or a gardener has been able to make his creations tangible using different objects, tools, and instruments. The process of writing a musical piece for a specific instrument contrasts greatly with digital music, which was born missing one facet, a control tool: the instrument. This missing element can make the user feel frustrated; but it also leads to a new breed of musician. A new breed in that they are no longer tied to a specific instrument, but to their own specific needs, both in terms of the control of the musical process. Intuition, crazy hope, and a utopian dream make us all look in the same direction. Through the application of research, the study of cutting edge industrial products of today and of the future, we strive to go beyond the obvious world opened by new technology in a quest for this modern utopia. As Hegel once wrote: where the instrument loses the right to be an exterior organ, it becomes the living organ of the artist

The TED story

Most artists know that I like to do collaboration to mix the ideas. Thus the singer Elizaveta offered me work with her as part of her performance for TED. I will develop a specific instrument to play while generating the video. We are facing something very grainy. The sounds will be produced by the granular synthesis and the video will be made by combining multiple particles. It is with great pleasure that I just put a small stone to participate in the construction of this beautiful monument represent by TED.

Things you might not know

Brissot took part in cultural outreach programs within the French penitentiary system. Thus, in 2009, the Prison of Poissy became a concert venue (performed by the prisoners).
