Medical device inventor and product development engineer for 39 years with a 6 year hiatus to start an aerospace company. I started at Cordis Corporation (now a division of J&J) and rose to the rank of Principal Engineer. I left Cordis in 1988 to start Symbiosis Corp. and grew that company up to 750 employees and a 200 million market cap. We sold Symbiosis to American Home Products and started Environmental Aeroscience Corp. (EAC) which worked on a variety of projects involving hybrid rocket propulsion. EAC performed research and development activities for NASA, DARPA, and the US Air Force Propulsion Laboratory and participated in an industry consortium for the demonstration and development of hybrid-propulsion launch boosters. Our team flew the first NASA hybrid sounding rockets and co-developed the propulsion system for Burt Rutan's Spaceship One. My current team and I started Syntheon in 1994 to get back into the medical device business and have been at it ever since. Between Cordis, Symbiosis and Syntheon we have worked on just about every type of medical device in use today, including but not limited to Cardiology, Electrophysiology, General Surgery, OBGYN Surgery, Laparoscopy, Flexible Endoscopy and Radiation Therapy. I have 117 US Patents, 30 or more in the works and dozens of International Patents. I am a commercial multi-engine rated fixed wing pilot and a helicopter pilot. I'm married to the thoroughly delightful Kimberly Kyle Smith and have two wonderful children - a girl 18 (Starting at Cornell in the fall!) and a boy 15. We also have two golden retrievers Brinkley and Kosmo and a Papillon named Rocket. We also have a cat whose name I can never quite remember.

The people of America need role models other than just than actors and athletes.
