An idea worth spreading
How music and creative arts is a tool to improve mental health and development in all the domains, physical, emotional, mental, creative, and social. The program I developed for youth at risk, gave them confidence to deal with their peers, and creativity to solve problems. This program was a huge success and parents said it was the first time their kids looked forward to coming to school

The TED story
I have been an advocate for music and mental health for decades, supporting charities with concerts to remove stigma for mental health issues. My passion is to support children and youth to engage them in their own creativity and to support them in learning about their own value. When I produced The Creative Players after school program in a small First Nations community called Sharbot Lake, I had intended to use music and drama to create a finished theatrical production. But the youth ages 7-15 changed all of that into something different. They acted out skits and improvised and I was amazed at how they were able to engage with each other in such a positive way. I had autistic kids doing sound effects with instruments, and brought props and costumes. I asked them where the setting was and who their characters were and they created the entire skit (all captured on video). They developed self-esteem, a sense of humour, confidence and excitement for coming to school. Parents and teachers told me they were confident at recess when dealing with conflict, and that they were able to tap into characters they created to de-escalate many situations. This program needs no money to run, and the teacher in charge only needs to keep everyone respectful. I ran this program with two parent volunteers and it was sponsored by a local business for two semesters, where the students had healthy snacks after school.
