I believe we live in a beautiful blue planet that we need to preserve for our children. That is why I have decided to devote myself to the promotion of sustainability. Retrospectively, I use to say that a life can be divided into three parts: first the decade of 20's, when it is time for education, the decades of 30's and 40's, time for human and professional development, and the golden 50th, the time for being. My twenties were a continous journey to the north. I studied Physics at University of Seville, then I did my PhD at the Theoretical Physics Department at University Autonoma de Madrid (UAM). To do that I won a predoctoral researcher fellowship at the Institute for the Structure of Matter at CSIC. Thirties: hands at work! When I was 28 I moved to Germany for 3 years to the Max-Planck-Institute fuer Quanteoptik, one of the leading research institutes of the world on its specialty, as a Marie Curie Research Fellow of the European Union. I was involved in the study of the micromaser, an fascinating application of quantum optics (ask for instance the physics nobel price of 2012!) However, something was missing: the direct contact with real social problems lacking in the world of elite researchers. That´s why I got a Professor University position in Mexico (1.999-03) Here I could also work in the promotion of a cascade of social programs for the popularization of science and sustainability. There I could reconcile my two passions: scientific research and social projects. On one hand, I was a researcher at the national system for science (CONACYT) On the other, I was working intensively in different social projects. First, with the FORESTA group formed with my students. We fighted against deforestation, one of the main environmental problems in Mexico. Second, I was also involved in popularization of science, since Mexico needs for its developement to reach a "critical mass" of young people moving to science programs. I was the director of the itinerant science museum of my university: "The tralier of science". After installing the museum we served 42.000 visits in 15 different communities scattered in the mountains. In 2002 I won a national contest with a science experiments notebook for kids. 26.000 copies were distributed by the goberment among all the primary schools of Mexico. I was also the creator and conductor of a TV program "the wizard of science" to bring closer the science to the families. Forties: In 2004 I come back to the University of Sevilla with a Return Program of the regional goverment aimed to repatriate distinguished scientist back to Spain. I founded that here the main environmental problem was climate change. Spain is one of the most affected countries in Europe; however the society was not aware of it. Hands at work. I was one of the 200 spanish personalities chosen to attend a personal training by Al Gore, just after receiving the Nobel Price in 2007. I became a climate ambassador at The Climate Project Spain (TCPS). I gave so many talks that one year later I was chosen one of the 100 most active Al Gore's TCP collaborator in the planet. Think globally but act locally! In 2008 I founded SUSTENTA in my home town, an association aimed to fight against climate change. In 3 years we run 25 projects reaching to 20.000 people. For this we receive a Emilio Castelar award for the defense of the environment last year. SUSTENTA wants to embrace science and public awareness. In 2009 I become a climate change scientific assesor of GreenPeace Spain. I wrote for them their renowned scientific report: "climate crisis: scientific evidences of climate change in Spain". I love our planet. That is why I try to communicate the need of taking care of mother Earth by all possible means: researching, writing books, composing music and giving conferences all around Andalucia.

"Speed is irrelevant if you go in the wrong direction" said Gandhi. We need to learn to live in peace with our planet and with each others. This is the true meaning of sustainability. Let the planet point the way; for she is the best pedagogue. Ecomimesis is the right path. Why not starting by learning to close cycles as our mother Earth does?

A letter to Santa December 2009 in Climate Summit in Copenhagen. I was convinced that a fair, ambitious and binding climate treaty will be achieved. I was so exultant that I organized a gathering of 400 signatures among my town fellows. In Copenhagen signatures collected from all over the globe were joined to form a tongue of 13 million signatures. I said in the Klima Forum that the "country of signatures" has actually more inhabitants than Denmark. Who could ignore the voice of science, the voice of people, the voice of the Earth? Politicians could. Back home. Sometime later I discovered a letter from my little daughter Inmita written to Santa Claus that december. She said that this year she just wanted the climate treaty to be signed so mother earth can be saved. I could not finish reading. But then I noticed I was also asking for gifts to "Santa politicians". Earth rights are not given away. They must be conquered! This gave me strength to fight on for mother earth.
