Hurricane Katrina did nearly as much damage to New Orleans as a nuclear bomb. The difference is that the vast disaster was an engineering failure. The same problem will recur if we don't protect the city from future events. Climate change will increase the risk of another tragedy. New Orleans needs reliable planning for and protection from water incursion. To preserve New Orleans, we need to move toward and improve upon the Dutch engineering model. Perhaps our greatest challenge is to preserve the culture of one of the world's most unique cities, virtually all of whose citizens were forcibly displaced, many of whom will never return. Many historical archives were damaged and lost. Old New Orleanians can help preserve the city's culture by returning their folkways to their city of origin. New New Orleanians can help preserve the culture by relocating there and adopting it as their own. With sustained effort, the new New Orleans can be a shining example of human triumph over tragedy.
