I am the founder of Publicase Scientific Communication, a Brazilian company specializing in biological and biomedical scientific communication founded in 2008. I have a PhD in molecular biology and two years of post‐doc training at the National Institutes of Health, in the United States. Additionally, for four years I worked as an associate editor at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the publishers of the prestigious American scientific journal Science. I have authored a number of news pieces in high-impact journals including Science, Lancet Oncology and Cell and a TV script for Discovery Science.

This year marks fifty years since the first act that initiated Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1964, and which lasted until 1984. Thus, I will tell you this amazing short story that happened a few years ago. Its about my mother, who was a young journalist during that time, a picture hanging on the wall in a house in Washington DC many years later, an Irish friend, and life’s extraordinary encounters. There is a memorable photo of one of the most popular protests that occurred in the streets of Rio de Janeiro in 1968 called "The protest of 100,000 people" (passeata dos cem mil-in Portuguese) in which a group of journalists marches under a banner that reads: Journalists against the dictatorship.
