Bio

Last year I stared a media coop in our town that includes an online radio station and journalism outreach programs. I have an extensive background in audio and video production as well as writing and photography. Citizen journalism is creating change in our lives daily. I operate a small business from my home in Squamish, BC. My company helps you brand promotional products. Recently I applied to host a TEDx in my community and its going to change my life. Yee haw!

I'm passionate about

I really enjoy connecting people and work as a catalyst and match maker for people in our community. As I enter my forties, teaching and mentoring has become the center point of my life.

An idea worth spreading

If everyone who doesn't volunteer, gave 30 minutes to their community every week, it would change the world. Play cards with seniors. Teach a kid how to catch. Pick up the fast food wrappers in the ditch.

Areas of expertise

DJing, Graphic Design, Leadership & Mentoring, Marketing / Branding, Technology - Education, web design / development

The TED story

I took over a struggling community project in 2012. An online radio station landed on my lap and it occurred to me that I could build a touchstone for our entire community. A place to meet, share ideas, music, writing and art. Shortly after we became a cooperative with a mandate to empower our citizens to use media tools to share their stories. Squamish Free Media was born. Six months ago I was reading my Wired magazine and dove into the TED article. The writer described a huge groundswell of grassroots TEDx events and the culture behind them. Within an hour of reading the article I was online applying to host a TEDx. It was one of those moments where I had no doubt I had to do this. The values of TED align well with what I'm trying to create in our community through the coop. It allows people to understand what my project is all about and will in turn give us the visibility we need to get our coop growing.
