I think the term "STEM" is middle-aged and too narrow. I think "STEAM" is over-used and has a limited impact. I believe STEM by Design is what we need to pursue. It is imperative to recognize how the creative process and STEM elements work together seamlessly in the "real world." Design is at the core of all applications of STEM and to excel in the meaningful use of these subjects, creative thinking and artistic sensibilities are absolutely essential. The creative process allows STEM practitioners to move beyond understanding to identifying potential challenges and opportunities and ultimately solving meaningful problems and creating valuable products and results. Combining the STEM and Design Thinking concepts and skills is what allows us to create a video game, design a dress, build a bridge, formulate a medication... essentially STEM is only applied through design. It gives STEM cohesion, relevance, and purpose.
