Jodi Lomask

Upon founding Capacitor in 1997, Jodi Lomask, began exploring non-traditional combinations of arts and sciences through movement. Under her artistic direction, Capacitor created works that tackle the past and future of reproduction (futurespecies 2000), Earth’s duet with the Universe (Within Outer Spaces 2001), the heroism and fantasy of video gaming (Avatars 2002) and the visible and invisible layers of the Earth into the core (Digging in the Dark 2004) and an exploration of desire and yearning in the natural world (biome, 2007). Lomask’s uncanny and contemplative use of technology and science won her invitations to speak at the Monaco Dance Forum and the Ecological Society of America meeting. Her work has been covered by Nature Magazine, Wired.com, Res Magazine, SHIFT Magazine, NBC 11’s Tech NOW!, CNET Radio, TECH TV, Dance Magazine, San Francisco Magazine, and The New York Times. A 1996 cum laude graduate of the dance conservatory at SUNY Purchase, Lomask has trained at the Royal Ballet Academy, Merce Cunningham Studio, London Contemporary Dance School, the Rotterdam Dansacademie, L' Espace Catastrophe, and Jacob's Pillow. She has performed with Project Bandaloop, Kneejerk, Erica Essner Performance Co-op, Zaccho Dance Theatre, and Capacitor and has taught workshops and classes in modern dance technique at universities across the United States. Lomask participated in CHIME, a mentorship program of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company with apparatus dance artist Joanna Haigood. She was in residence at Yaddo artist colony in 2005 and 2006 and Djarassi Artist Colony in April 2008. Capacitor performs and tours extensively. Nationally, they have been presented at the Krannert Center at University of Illinois, the PAC at SUNY Purchase, Louisville's Brown Theater, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Florida, 314 Project in Chicago, among others. Internationally, they have performed in Malaysia for ReVolvolution, Canada for fFIDA- the Festival for International Dance Artists, El Salvador with the National Youth Symphony Orchestra, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. Capacitor has delivered extended runs in New York's HERE Mainstage and the American Theatre of Actors, San Francisco's Cowell Theater, Project Artaud Theater, the Exploratorium, the Yerba Buena Center, and SomArts Gallery, and at Burning Man 99/00/02. She has set choreography on Chicago's 'Same World, Different Planet', the Salvadorian Olympic Gymnastics Team, and has been commissioned to create an original work for NASA’s Yuri’s Night event. She recently appeared in National Geographic's 'Wild Chronicles' with canopy tree ecologist Dr. Nalini Nadkarni. Lomask's choreography unites unique characters, innovative performance devices, with distinctive movement textures for Capacitor's signature synthesis of visual magic and raw athleticism. Defined by a sculptural approach to the body, costuming, and props, her inventive choreographic solutions emerge from problems born of conceptual, physical, and spatial parameters. Lomask has created performance concepts for the World Showcase and Future World in Disney's Epcot Center in Florida. Lomask sees the world as an amalgam of seemingly contradictory, yet synergistic perspectives. The daughter of a biomedical research engineer and a visual artist, Lomask spent her childhood going to laboratories and gallery openings. She weaves these two worlds into the tapestry of her work, creating highly visual, biological images and rhythms. After spending her childhood planting things, Lomask put herself through college by gardening in Connecticut. She will be drawing on this wealth of knowledge in the Urban Canopy project.
