The TED story
I'd like to share a story about a film about my uncle called, "Think of Me First as a Person". In December 2006, decades after my grandfather and filmmaker Dwight Core Sr. shot the first frame, the film won a special honor: one of only a handful of amateur movies accepted into the Library of Congress, National Film Registry.
"Think of Me First as a Person" is a short documentary about my uncle, Dwight Core, Jr. who was born with down syndrome. The footage was shot on 16mm in the 1960s. My cousin, George Ingmire, completed the film forty years later.
The film explores perceptions about down syndrome from multiple viewpoints. The sincere tone and heartwarming narration by my grandfather lends a remarkable poignancy to this short film. The story that unfolds within this documentary is sure to shed light on both the struggles and blessings of raising a child with special needs.
The story was covered by the Virginian-Pilot and includes some clips from the film. See below for more:

Things you might not know
People don't know that I have twins, Isaac and Adalai. It's the most rewarding and exciting "job" I've ever had. I daydream about world-schooling my children – teaching them and learning more about the world and exploring cultures through real experiences – and hope that dream becomes a reality some day.
