Bio

Amrah Aliyu is a distinguished Nigerian social entrepreneur, poet, and gender equity advocate renowned for her work at the intersection of media, policy engagement, and women's leadership development. As the Founder and Executive Director of the Salma Attah Foundation for Women and Girls Support (SAFWGS), she has dedicated over a decade to uplifting underserved communities, empowering over 10,000 women and girls through direct outreach, education, and policy advocacy. Amrah is the visionary behind the Kallabi Leadership Fellowship, the first-of-its-kind initiative in Niger State, Nigeria, designed to equip young women with practical leadership skills, mentorship, and hands-on governance experience. Through this fellowship, young women from marginalized communities are trained and placed in legislative internships, building a pipeline of informed, capable female leaders ready to transform Nigeria’s political and civic space. Her work has earned her a place on national and international stages. Amrah is a TEDx speaker (Not Too Young to Make an Impact), a TEDxMinna organizer, and has been featured in Daily Trust, Voice of Nigeria, BBC Media Action, TheCable, and the Nation Newspaper, among others. Amrah has also been recognized globally for her efforts. She was named one of the Top 25 Women Redefining Leadership in Northern Nigeria and was the first runner-up for the Oby Ezekwesili Women Advocacy Award. She is a recipient of a development grant from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Global Goodwill Ambassador, a Commonwealth100 Alumnus, and a nominee of the Future Awards Africa . A gifted communicator, Amrah has hosted award-winning programs like “Not Just A Pretty Face” (in Hausa: Ba Kyaun Fuska Kadai Gareki Ba) — giving women a space to speak truth to power on radio. She’s led successful campaigns like the Orange Walk Against GBV, Arewa MeToo Standstill Rally, and partnered with platforms like BellaNaija and SheTank for the Her Money Her Power campaign on women's economic empowerment. Her literary voice is equally powerful. She is the author of "Breasts Are Names of Flowers", a poetry collection that intertwines personal narrative with social critique, exploring womanhood, resilience, and advocacy. Amrah holds a Bachelor’s in Agriculture, a Master’s degree in International Development and specializing in Corporate Enterprise Management at Pan-Atlantic University. Amrah continues to leverage insight, lived experience, and grassroots engagement to push for systemic change. Through SAFWGS, Amrah is building a movement. One that dares to believe women, no matter where they come from, can lead boldly and change the world In everything she does, Amrah’s vision remains clear: to create a world where every woman thrives, empowered to lead and succeed.

The TED story

Sometimes In 2019, I made it one of my goals to push myself beyond the ordinary by stretching beyond what I was used to, and so amongst many things. I was part of a collation of brilliant minds who organized the highly impactful TEDxMinna I was in charge of the Media and Event Management team of TEDxMinna at some point even the fundraising team both in 2020 and 2021. Turned out to be a great event; from the speakers to the powerful lessons gotten from all of the sessions. still I envisioned myself on this global stage to share my story and maybe just maybe inspire someone. In 2022, I got an opportunity to be a TEDx Speaker at TEDxKofarFada to speak on the the topic “NOT TOO YOUNG TO MAKE AN IMPACT” It was so exciting to see this event come live on TED Talks.
