Bio
Roger Hanlon spends lot of time diving the world’s oceans. His research lab in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, focuses on color and pattern in the natural world, with emphasis on cephalopods and fishes. He is particularly interested in the phenomenon of Rapid Adaptive Coloration, which is the ability of certain marine animals to produce ultrafast changes in their appearance for communication and camouflage. This line of research requires a multidisciplinary approach involving neuroscience, animal behavior, ecology, art, materials science and engineering. His research has appeared in numerous TV natural history documentaries.
In 2018 he published two books with coauthors:
-Cephalopod Behavior (Cambridge University Press)
-Octopus, Squid and Cuttlefish: a visual scientific guide to the ocean’s most advanced invertebrates (University of Chicago Press)
