Eric Liu

Eric Liu is the CEO of Citizen University, which works to build a culture of powerful and responsible citizenship. He also founded the Aspen Institute’s Citizenship & American Identity Program. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including "You’re More Powerful Than You Think: A Citizen’s Guide to Making Change Happen"; and, most recently, "Become America: Civic Sermons on Love, Responsibility, and Democracy." He has given popular TED Talks on civic faith, power, and voting, and is featured in the PBS documentary “American Creed.” Liu served as a White House speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and later as the President's deputy domestic policy adviser. President Obama appointed him to the board of the Corporation for National and Community Service. He was elected in 2020 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, where he is cochair of the Our Common Purpose commission on democratic renewal. A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, Liu also serves on the Yale University Council. He lives in Seattle, where he has served on the boards of the Seattle Public Library and the Washington State Board of Education, and cofounded the Alliance for Gun Responsibility.
