She is a Spanish journalist who lives in New York since 1999. For the past 12 years she has been a regular contributor for the Spanish newspaper El Pais, and since 2004 she is its cultural correspondent in New York. Her articles have been also featured on the LA Weekly, Vogue, GQ, Cinemania, Rolling Stone, ARS, La Repubblica, Susy-Q, and Ioncinema, among others. She specializes on arts and culture but through her 14 years career she has covered all kind of news, from the 9/11 attacks to Hurricane Katrina. She is also the director of the 65 minutes documentary Surviving Amina, a love story challenged by illness and death, an intimate diary on resilience and hope. The movie is a compelling lesson on life that explores how we construct meaning from events that defy our emotional understanding: the illness and loss of a child with Leukemia. Surviving Amina has been screened in international festivals all around the world. Barbara has also extensive experience as a producer, having worked for The Family Film Productions in New York for over three years. She has a BA in Journalism by Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and a MA in Journalism by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid/El Pais. She is the recipient of V Paco Rabal Cultural Journalism Award 2011 and the USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellowship 2009. She has her own bilingual blog (English and Spanish, depending on the mood), www.cronicasbarbaras.com in which she features New York stories that catch her eye for either cultural, political or social reasons.
