Bio

I am the US Director First Draft, a non-profit dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges associated with trust and truth in the digital age. I was previously a Research Fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Before that, the Research Director at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, head of social media for the UN Refugee Agency and Director of News Services for Storyful. I am one of the world’s experts on user generated content, and have led two substantial research projects investigating how it is handled by news organizations. In 2009 I was asked by the BBC to develop a comprehensive social media training curriculum for the organization and I led a team of staff delivering training around the world. I hold a PhD in Communication and an MA in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. I started my career as a professor at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

I'm passionate about

journalism and quality information.

An idea worth spreading

We need a new global organization to tackle the challenges of information disorder. Without the scale of the technology companies, our responses are fragmented and weakened by national boundaries.

Areas of expertise

journalism, misinformation, research methods, user generated content, verification

The TED story

I gave my TED talk in 2019 in Vancouver, on bringing the public to the fight against information disorder. It was an incredible experience but the conference was an utter blur. Excited to go to TED without the stress of giving a talk!
