I think of the lessons my Dad taught me every day yet he’s been gone for over 20 years - no matter your sense of greatness, your accomplishments; no matter your size (he was a big guy, a wrestler, at 260 pounds!); how ‘big’ you are in every sense of the word - you must look out for others. Whether it’s a friendly shoulder to lend, a meal to share or someone you need to stand up for, he taught me that love goes hand in hand with integrity.
I was born in Hamburg, Germany because my dad was wrestling in Europe; when I was five, he returned with me and my French mom to his homeland, Trinidad & Tobago. I studied in Trinidad and Barbados and lived and worked in Trinidad, as well as the UK, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Egypt. Life in Trinidad & Tobago gives me the ability to see things through the lens of this melting pot I call home, comfortable wherever I go. My dad was well-known around the world, very accomplished yet he had this profound sense of humility - treating all of us and everyone who crossed his path with respect. My sense of justice started with him, how he treated us and those around - ministers, barmen, housekeepers, neighbours – everyone ate at his table no matter their perceived status, there was food for everyone, meals which he cooked and I learned!
He was in every sense a Force for Good, a term I have had the privilege to see live in my workplace - my sense of accomplishment comes from living and sharing the importance of these principles with our two teenaged daughters - diversity of thought, real equality for women, fairness, justice, speaking truth to power and that everyone is truly equal.
