Bio

Imagine a young man who was born and grew up in one of the poorest villages in the world, first put on shoes at age 13, first saw television at age 15, was the first graduate in his entire clan and is crazy enough to believe that he can slow down deforestation in Africa! Sanga is a passionate African social entrepreneur who does not take no for an answer! He is obsessed with stopping deforestation and combating climate change and believes that this generation has an obligation to stop deforestation. He has dedicated his life to ensuring that people in developing countries have a sustainable alternative to fuel-wood and has developed low-cost, tailor-made technology which creates alternative sources of income for communities that destroy forests for income. Sanga is a TED Fellow, 2012, a Community Solutions Fellow, 2012 and an Unreasonable Institute Fellow, 2011. He has been interviewed by the BBC, his life story has been published by the New York Times, NextBillion and Revolution.is.

I'm passionate about

Stopping deforestation by creating alternatives for communities which destroy forests for survival

An idea worth spreading

In the race to fight global warming, time is of the essence. Tropical deforestation is responsible for about 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions – more than all the cars, trucks, planes, boats, and trains in the world combined. Now is the time to act!

Areas of expertise

Accounting, Entrepreneurship & Business, Social Business, Taking Care of Cows

The TED story

In 2009, I made a journey from Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda where I worked to my home village to visit my mother. On my way home, I met my 12 year old sister carrying a huge bundle of firewood on her head. When she saw me, she started crying and told me that she missed school two times every week and walked for 10 kilometres to go and collect wood for the family! This broke my heart and that day, I made a decision to dedicate the rest of my life to finding a solution to over dependence on fuel wood in Africa. I would later quit my job to start Eco-fuel Africa, a social enterprise which invented a new way of converting agricultural waste into green charcoal and organic fertilizers. This enterprise also invests part of its proceeds into replanting trees. We have also designed and piloted a franchise model which will enable us to replicate our business model in all Sub-Saharan African countries by 2030. But we need partners like you to make this possible!
