Marc Ernesti

Educator/Teacher

Marc Ernesti has held a dual position at the Royal Academy of Music, leading the Music Business strand as Head of Professional Development and teaching the same subject as Academic Studies professor. Since 2017, he is Assistant Professor and Program Co-ordinator of Music Business, and Executive Director of the Crane Institute for Music Business and Entrepreneurship, State University of New York at Potsdam. Parallel to an extensive career in senior management of international music organisations of over 15 years, including Head of Marketing and Media at Aldeburgh Music, Marc returned to academia with an MMus by Research at the University of Sheffield. In recognition of his services, he was created an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (HonARAM); and in 2017, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

In a word, my passion is to communicate music: from the days of studying conducting through to writing about music, as a music journalist; to 15+ years in senior management in the music industry, communicating music to audiences; and now, communicating the excitement that is music, and the arts, to the next generation, as an educator: if you like, the excitement is about (musical) ideas worth sharing...

Music Business, Music Festivals, Promotion and Marketing of Music

Having helped with a very successful TEDx in Aldeburgh, U.K., back in 2010 https://www.ted.com/tedx/events/289, and being now based at this wonderful campus that is SUNY Potsdam, the idea of a US version seemed obvious - and there is an amazing team of academics, professionals, and local community members alike here who are excited to make this happen!

With a Combined Honours degree in Music and German, I firmly believe in cross-disciplinary working, and mutual inspiration. I am keen to embrace technology not as an end in itself, but see it utilized with intent and creative integrity. I firmly believe in dialogue across cultures and disciplines, the concept of the open forum as a think-tank for developing new ideas, and an atmosphere of intellectual generosity.
